Brief History of the Saturn Café

In 1979 The Saturn Café first opened its’ doors in a small house that was renovated for use as a casual vegetarian café specializing in late night dining. The menu consisted of cold sandwiches, salads, soups and, delectable desserts. From its’ inception, the Saturn was created with an explicit purpose of being a progressive business serving food that is both healthy and decadent.

Three years later, the Saturn moved across the street to into a building which once housed a pizza hut.

In 1995 the saturn was purchased by employees from the original owners. After brief close for remodel, Saturn was reopened as full service restaurant. Fries and veggie burgers were added to menu...

On New Years Eve of 1998, an electrical fire from old wiring burned down Mission St. location. We used the tragedy as an opportunity to further realize the potential the Saturn has always had by moving to larger, more central location in downtown Santa Cruz at the corner of Laurel and Pacific Ave. The previous Boston Market site with 3000 square feet and a round, planet-like shape is a perfect match. Saturn’s move downtown is met with positive applause

Mission statement

Since 1979 the Saturn Café has established itself as an icon in Vegetarian dining. Our menu combines traditional American Diner fare with modern, even space-aged, concepts. Our legendary status is the result of a clear and unwavering dedication to three main values:
1) Progressive business practices.
2) Offering traditional American comfort food with high quality, vegetarian and healthy twists.
3) Providing a creative and energy packed atmosphere that reflects a vibrant and diverse community.

We consistently meet our core values through our equally strong commitments to fair labor practices, sustainable and organic agriculture, and supporting local and independent businesses. For example: our french fries are cooked in trans-fat free oil, which is later recycled to fuel bio-diesel cars. The Space Cowboy Burger, with bacon, onion rings and BBQ sauce, contains no meat and can be served with an organic salad at no extra cost. Our milkshakes are made from superior quality ice cream that is delivered twice weekly from McConnell’s family creamery in Santa Barbara.

When you step into the Saturn, you know you have arrived on another planet: where the foods of childhood fantasies are somehow not only more delicious than you ever remembered but are also healthier for your body, as well as the planet, than you ever thought possible; where dressing up in costume can happen on any night of the year; where customers at the table next to you are just as likely to burst into song as the staff, and where magic, it seems, might just lie behind every sparkly pink booth.

Community Members:

For the past three years, Saturn has partnered with us to serve healthy meals to our youth participants. Saturn opens their doors to us on the last day of our camp and feeds us for FREE! At camp we eat veggie food only which is a huge challenge for the youth in our program. Their amazing service, delicious food and feeling of community has been uplifting for our youth who come from urban cities around the Bay Area. They always feel supported and loved. At Saturn they get their very first experience of veggie eating in the "real world" outside of camp and they always LOVE IT! Thanks Saturn, for helping us create an experience for young artists and leaders that they will never forget.
-Castro, Art in Action Youth Leadership Program, co-founder & operations director

In 1999, the Santa Cruz Homeless Services Center decided to put together an annual fundraising dinner featuring excellent soups donated by local restaurants. Because of their reputation for both generosity to the community and fine vegetarian soups, the Saturn Cafe was the first restaurant we called. Of course the Saturn agreed to contribute right away and has donated soup and other items to the dinner every year since. Thanks Saturn.

-Don Lane, Homeless Services Center
