Take Action: Stop Monsanto’s Sweet Corn

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Monsanto’s genetically engineered sweet corn may be set to hit the market this fall. Genetically engineered sweet corn, the first Monsanto crop designed to be consumed by people, is genetically engineered to produce pesticides and resist herbicides.

Bill Freese, a science policy analyst at Center for Food Safety told Fast Company “There’s a concern with these GE crops that we eat with minimal processing [like sweet corn]…we’re exposed to a lot more of whatever is in it versus a processed corn product,”  A study earlier this year found that pregnant women and their fetuses were contaminated with pesticides associated with GE food. Last year, researchers in France found that GE crops had numerous adverse health effects.

Help make sure GE Sweet Corn is not sold by signing Food & Water Watch’s petition to grocery stores. they’ll be delivering this petition to the top ten grocery store chains in the country in an attempt to stop GE Sweet Corn from reaching consumers.

Support the FAIR Education Act

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

UPDATE: 10/11/2011 – EQ-CA reports that today anti-equality advocates have failed to collect the required number of signatures to place a referendum for the November 2012 ballot to overturn the Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act.  Click Here to read more about today’s victory.

Originally posted on July 26, 2011:

The Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act amends the Education Code to prohibit discriminatory education and ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are fairly and accurately included in instructional materials.

Studies have shown that inclusion of LGBT people in instructional materials is linked to greater student safety and lower rates of bullying.  In schools where the contributions of the LGBT community are included in educational instruction, bullying declined by over half and LGBT students were more likely to feel they have an opportunity to make positive contributions at school.

The FAIR Education Act is under attack from anti-LGBT groups that are trying to repeal it through a referendum. They will be gathering signatures all across California over the next three months. They want to keep our struggle for equality buried and hidden. They are scared that if we raise a generation of young people that know about our struggle, they will forever lose the ability to demonize our community.

You can help stop them!

Touch base with your friends, family and co-workers to make sure Californians hear the truth about the FAIR Education Act, and what it does and what it does NOT do.

Tell Secretary Sebelius and DEH Commissioner Edward Ehlinger: Stop funding Bachmann’s anti-gay clinic.

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Conversion therapy, otherwise known as “reparative therapy” or “the ex-gay movement” has been denounced by the scientific and medical communities as ineffective, and potentially dangerous.  This fact hasn’t stopped Marcus and Michelle Bachmann from using this hateful practice at their clinic – a clinic which was recently discovered to have received over $137,000 in federal Medicaid funds, in addition to $24,000 in other state and federal funds.

It’s bad enough that Bachmann and Associates, after denying for years they practiced ex-gay therapy, clearly encourages patients to pray the gay away. Our taxpayer dollars shouldn’t be funding it.

Tell Secretary Sebelius and DEH Commissioner Edward Ehlinger: Stop funding Bachmann’s anti-gay clinic.

Click Here to visit Credo Action and sign their petition that already has over 47,000 signatures, just 3,000 short of Credo’s 50,000 goal.
