UPDATE: 10/11/2011 – EQ-CA reports that today anti-equality advocates have failed to collect the required number of signatures to place a referendum for the November 2012 ballot to overturn the Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act. Click Here to read more about today’s victory.
Originally posted on July 26, 2011:
The Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act amends the Education Code to prohibit discriminatory education and ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are fairly and accurately included in instructional materials.
Studies have shown that inclusion of LGBT people in instructional materials is linked to greater student safety and lower rates of bullying. In schools where the contributions of the LGBT community are included in educational instruction, bullying declined by over half and LGBT students were more likely to feel they have an opportunity to make positive contributions at school.
The FAIR Education Act is under attack from anti-LGBT groups that are trying to repeal it through a referendum. They will be gathering signatures all across California over the next three months. They want to keep our struggle for equality buried and hidden. They are scared that if we raise a generation of young people that know about our struggle, they will forever lose the ability to demonize our community.
You can help stop them!
Touch base with your friends, family and co-workers to make sure Californians hear the truth about the FAIR Education Act, and what it does and what it does NOT do.

This Thursday, September 29 at 6:00pm at the Space Lounge in Berkeley – Join the Saturn Cafe & TUPOCC (The United People of Color Caucus of the National Lawyers Guild) to raise funds for the defense of the Angola 3, political prisoners locked up in Louisiana’s horrific Angola Prison.
Last week, we witnessed a grave miscarriage of justice with the execution of Troy Davis in Georgia.
This week, the hunger strikes are set to resume at Pelican Bay where those in solitary confinement are demanding CDCR meet their 5 core demands.
Richard Brown of the SF8 will speak briefly after the film about political repression and recent legal victories in their case, followed by Jerry Elster of All of Us or None making connections to the struggles of those currently and formerly incarcerated nationwide.
Fundraiser! $5-10 donation at door (no one turned away for lack of funds)
For more information check out “In the Land of the Free” Screening and Fundraiser for Angola 3! on Facebook.
